Lilly Bennett is determined to become a professional musician. So when her first chance at a big break comes with an incredibly arrogant (and incredibly attractive) British composer named Will Darcy, she's not going to let his bad manners ruin her chance. But things start getting complicated when a whole film crew comes to Lilly's small town, including oh-so-heartbreaking Yuri Wickham and please-go-away Collin Williamson. Lilly's sisters seem to be falling in love faster than her mom can gossip about it, and Lilly may be next . . .

The Pride and Prejudice of Musicians edition by Jessica Daw Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This is a really good book! A quick fun read, definitely worth your time and money!
It is a really good variation that keeps the original characters, I love it I couldn't put it down until I finished it
Jessica did a great job in her modernization of pride and prejudice spinoff in this book. I couldn't put it down. I will recommend it to all my Jane Austin friends!
2.5 rounded to 3 stars

This is cute and the writing is good, and the modern plot definitely runs parallel to the original Pride and Prejudice. With the contemporary setting, however, it could use additional variation to the plot to make it seem more believable.

As annoying as the Regency Mrs. Bennet is, her obsession about getting her daughters married is motivated by the reality of that era. With Longbourn entailed to Mr. Collins, the girls' future is dependent upon their marriages to men who can support them. Gentlewomen did not have the option to work to support themselves. But in the 21st century in America, a Mrs. Bennet with the same obsession goes beyond annoying into unbelievable.

Her mismatch with Mr. Bennet also seems kind of bizarre in this day and age. The author attempts to explain it Mr. B. promised "till death do us part" when he married her and intends to honor his vow, while Mrs. B. is too clueless to recognize she might be happier with someone else. I still can't fathom why one or the other hasn't filed for divorce years ago.

All five of the Bennet sisters are in an unnamed band, and it's never made clear what kind of music they create. Lilly (Elizabeth) plays acoustic guitar and composes their music, Jane writes their lyrics, Mary plays keyboard, and Kitty (Lydia's twin in this imagining) plays drums. Lilly and Lydia are the primary singers for the group. That's about the extent of the detail provided about the band itself. Mr. Bennet manages them. He has a music studio that they record in (which is the stand-in for the Regency Mr. Bennet's study), but they're far from having any national visibility- just local gigs and the CDs they sell via their website.

There's a tremendous amount of excitement when Cade Bingley, a renowned movie producer, contacts Mr. Bennet about using the girls' music in his next movie. Cade comes to Meryton to meet with them and leases an estate nearby, bringing with him his actress-sister Carrie Bingley, his other sister and brother-in-law Louisa and Jacob Hurst, who are also in the movie biz, and his friend Will Darcy, a very famous and very wealthy music composer.

Will is stand-offish and doesn't mingle with the locals, while Cade is gregarious and outgoing, making friends with everyone. Lilly gets her nose out of joint when Will looks at printed copies of her music and makes changes even before listening to any of it. As in canon, Cade immediately takes a shine to Jane. He likes the Meryton area so much that he decides to shoot his movie there. The surge of actors and crew members who turn up for filming are the equivalent of the Meryton militia.

This includes Yuri Wickham, who gets with Lilly and spouts the usual "poor me" story about his broken relationship with Will Darcy. It isn't explained how Wickham is part of the cast rather than being blacklisted from a movie that Will's best friend is producing, especially with Will personally involved.

Collin Williamson (Mr. Collins) is a scriptwriter for a soap opera called "Rosings," whose lead actress is Catherine de Bourgh. His worship for her is really creepy, especially since he is determined to follow her advice to the letter about finding a wife while he's in Meryton visiting his aunt, Mrs. Long. Nothing specific should make him fixate on the Bennets (again, no entail!), yet he does. First he approaches Jane but, when he learns she's already seeing someone, he immediately turns to Lilly. He proposes to her and, when that doesn't pan out, he manages to get Charlotte Lucas to agree to marry him later the same day. In this case, Charlotte accepts only because she wants Collin's contacts to get her writing career off the ground.

There's as little in-depth description of the movie-making process as there is of the Bennet sisters' band- no hint of what the movie is about, not even a title. After a big masquerade wrap-up party, all the filmmakers leave town, including Cade, and Jane is left behind brokenhearted.

The story continues on, all related in limited third person from Lilly's perspective, perfectly in step with canon. Some aspects of the plot work better than others. Pemberley is still in England, and the Gardiners (who live in Los Angeles) are costume designers for a movie being filmed there, which is how Lilly ends up on the grounds.

Lilly is more direct than Elizabeth Bennet in the original. In the first half of the book, she repeatedly TELLS Will that he doesn't like her ("We both know you don't like me" and similar) and makes it clear that she doesn't think much of him, either. There are no veiled put-downs or teasing or debating; she's pretty much in-your-face about it. He shouldn't be surprised when his declaration of love isn't reciprocated.

There's a simplicity about the story and the presentation that makes me wonder if this is geared to a preteen/teen reading audience. It's really not bad- As I said to begin this review, it's a cute idea and I can't complain about any major writing errors. It's also a clean read. It just lacks the depth of character or detail that appeal to an older reading audience, and many of the P&P elements don't seem logical in this modern story.
This is a well written book and great fun to read. It has all the people from the original but a bit different take on things. You will love the musical setting and adore both Darcy and Lilly. You really don't want to miss this book. It is a wonderful modern version and you will love Meryton and Pemberly and Canada. Have a wonderful day reading this most delightful book.
